Staying out of the drama
Every other day it feels like my X feed is flooded with a new AI drama episode.
There was an OpenClaw season, then a Anthropic/Claude code season which is currently ongoing, and who knows what will come next.
I think that AI brings a lot of things up that are worth discussing, and very important to discuss. The most important themes IMO are around data.
What data can/cannot should/should not be used to train models, and more importantly how can any sovereign human chose to opt-out from contributing their life in all it’s intricacy to that data?
Things like that.
But a lot of what I see being discussed, including by the likes of @theo - whom I have learned a great deal from and truly respect - is in essence drama.
Are the biggest labs making some questionable moves?
I’d say so.
We’re in a boom or a bubble and there is definitely an element of ruthlessness at play. So expect a lot of heartbreak, betrayal, backstabbing and the so forth. That is the human part.
But my advice, to myself first and foremost, is to not get emotionally involved in it too much.
I’m all for the “vote with your money” approach. But I also think that following some of these trends shows a lack of discernment.
For instance portraying the CEO of Anthropic as a hero for his stance against unlimited use of their models for mass surveillance and autonomos weapons is a little naive. I mean sure he’s saying the right thing at the right time. But that does not by any stretch mean his intentions are pure. Politians do that all the time and I don’t think much of them.
So my advice is to stick to sensible defaults and preserve your peace. Let the drama blow over, as it unevitably will.
Human emotion is not a stable thing. It comes and goes. It ebbs and flows.
